International Men's Day is celebrated annually on November 19th to recognise men's contributions to society and to promote gender equality. In 2018, the theme was "celebrating role models," and Trot Your Globe (Pty) Ltd partnered with Balfour Mall to provide these inspiring men with an opportunity to relax.
Reflecting on the obstacles faced by men in today's society, such as the high rate of suicide and shorter life expectancy compared to women, Trot Your Globe and its partners aimed to provide a platform for men to destress and positively reboot. This was especially important in light of recent tragedies such as the suicide of South African hip hop star HHP and Mac Miller's drug overdose.
To celebrate International Men's Day, Trot Your Globe hosted an international men's weekend in partnership with Fives Futbol, featuring a rooftop Joburg sunset aerobics danceathon and kick fitness event. The event was a success, with Johannesburg residents coming out in support of husbands, dads, friends and colleagues to show that men are not alone in their struggles.
Goodie bags, sponsored by Virgin Active and Trot Your Globe, were awarded to participants but the true reward was the positive experience shared by all who attended. By promoting physical activity and providing a platform for men to connect and destress, Trot Your Globe and its partners aimed to empower men and promote mental wellness.
